How to Tie a Tie

How to Tie a Tie

Nobody wants to stand in front of a mirror fumbling with a tie while they're already running late. If you've never quite gotten the hang of tying a tie (or you learn it every year and forget it by the next) the arm wrap method is worth trying. You build the knot on your forearm where you can actually watch what your hands are doing, then slide the whole thing up around your neck.

Why the arm wrap method?

Tying a tie directly around your neck means working in reverse without a clear view of what your hands are doing and hoping for the best. Doing it on your arm first solves that - you can see every fold and loop happening right in front of you instead of guessing. It's especially handy if:

  • You've never tied a tie before
  • You want something quicker than the traditional method
  • You're a visual learner
  • You only wear a tie a few times a year and need a refresher every time

4 Easy Steps

Step 1: Lay the tie across your arm

Place the tie on your forearm with the wide end on the inside (closer to your elbow), skinny end on the outside (closer to your hand), and with the front side facing up.

Step 2: Wrap the end around three times

Take the skinny end of the tie and wrap it around your arm three times. These loops form the base of the knot.

Step 3: Grab the second loop

Reach through the top loop and grab the second loop.

Step 4: Pull through and create the knot

Pull the second loop through the top until the knot starts to form.

Step 4: Adjust and wear.

Place tie around your neck under the collar of your button up and adjust as needed.

FAQ

What's the easiest way to tie a tie?

Most people find the arm wrap method easiest starting out, simply because you can see the knot forming instead of working blind.

Can you tie a tie without using a mirror?

Yes, that's the whole point of this method. You're not relying on your reflection at all since the knot comes together on your arm first.

What kind of knot is this?

A clean, classic knot — the kind that works equally well for a job interview, a wedding, or a random Tuesday at the office.

Can I wear this knot with any suit style?

Yes, the classic knot works no matter what suit style you're in. Need a suit to go with it? Check out our suiting collection for styles that go well with a tie.
